If you want the comfort or safety of a sealed road then try the
345km
journey via the inland Gulf Development Rd, the gateway to the amazing
Cape York Peninsula. Experience the real outback only hours from
Cairns. You can approach this journey from two directions.
Travelling via Kuranda and
Mareeba by crossing the range close to Cairns. (Best for towing)
Crossing the range near Port Douglas to Mt
Molloy for fantastic views to add to the scenic coast road if you really
have to miss Kuranda
(270kms).
While this journey
is longer travelling via the inland road is actually fastest. The road
is all-weather and only a small section remains to be sealed. Recent
works have completed the road base and weather proofed most of the route so
now less than 30kms remains of un-sealed road. If you are towing a van
then this is really the only route to consider. One thing however to
be very careful of at all times is cattle straying onto the road.
A fair way into your journey will see you come across Lakelands Station.
This junction continues up to Cape York or through to Cooktown. If
your travelling to the tip we recommend you go via the Daintree one way and
leave Cooktown via Quincan caves near Laura. Return via Lakefield
Nat.Park and old Laura. Travelling from Lakefield to Laura is nowhere
near as scenic as continuing on to pass
Black Mountain National Park and Annan river gorge. Plus we might be lucky enough to be your hosts
again in Cooktown a second time.
We are
located on your right hand side shortly when you make your way into town.
